Where Do I Store My Piles of Pretty Wax Tarts?!?

Often we've heard that scents can greatly effect ones mood... this of course is the entire idea behind herbal and Aromatherapy products as well as many others.

Smelling something refreshing and zesty in your morning shower can completely change how you interpret your entire day and how well you get along with others. In addition, bad smells can even make people cranky... taking that into consideration most people want themselves, their clothes, and especially their home to smell as wonderful as possible!

This of course is why I LOVE great smelling Tarts! Just by simmering an hour or so in my house they fill up the rooms with glorious scents and they make even the cat and dog smell a whole lot better! You know that feeling you get when you walk into a small gift house or craft shop? Everything smells soooo wonderful due to all of the candles, tarts, and scented products. Like many others, I am constantly trying to reproduce that same effect in my own home. I've even had people compliment me on my perfume smelling so deliciously like apples and cinnamon... when really, it was just the tarts!

So anyway... Lately, I've looking for a way to display my growing collection of wax tarts in a way that they are visible, preserved, and cute all at the same time. I have many baskets in my home where I have tucked a tart or two and I even keep some tarts in an organza bag in my undergarment drawer & closet. Displaying them in that way really only works for a few of my tarts so I started looking for something bigger and better.

What I finally decided was to ask around and see what other people do. Here were the best unique ideas I thought should be shared with the rest of the world:

Covered Cake Plate 3 Tiered Wire Basket Heart Shaped Apothecary Jar

#1. Covered Cake Plates for Grubby or Dessert looking Tarts (Yum! Don't let anyone eat them though!)
#2. Trendy Clear or See-Through Apothecary Jars (you can use confetti in the bottom of these that match the colors of the tarts you are displaying, cute!)
#3. Ceramic Bowls nestled on top of some natural raffia
#4. Fluted Tin Pans filled w/cinny sticks or potpourri
#5. A Spice Rack... Really? ~ You can take an old spice rack and sit standard size tarts upright in the shelves to make a colorful shelf to display your tarts! I would have never thought of that one!
#6. Hanging Tiered Wire Baskets (you know the kind you put fruit or veggies in)

After Considering all the possibilities ~ I, Myself have finally decided to go with an Apothecary Jar which I have filled with tarts and Labelled "Tuff Cookies". Now I have something to point at when the little ones begin to whine! I'd Like to Thank everyone for their answers & if anyone has any pics I would love to see them and post them up for everyone else to see too!

Innovative New Shopping Showcase Takes Style-Savvy Consumers Out of the Mall and Into the Pink

Marmalade Pink, the Web’s hottest new destination for unique shopping choices, offers a whole new world for customers seeking extraordinary, out-of-the box products and services

Grayslake, IL – July 17, 2007 – Stylish shoppers seeking to break free from the confines of traditional large retail stores have a powerful new ally. Recently launched Marmalade Pink, an innovative business co-operative formed to bring together talented independent designers and artisans, offers unique products and services not available in mainstream retail establishments. Inspired by fantastic product giveaways, responsive customer service, and the ability to give back to their communities, visitors are flocking to this out-of-the box shopping showcase.
"Consumers are frustrated with the lack of retail diversity out there and want more choices than they can find in the big box stores," said co-founder Liz Nonnemacher. "When the local mall is your only shopping option, you miss out on a fantastic world of artists and designers that offer consistently high value and outstanding customer service."

A visit to Marmalade Pink will introduce customers to an extraordinary range of out-of-the-box retail options, including hot jewelry designs by Charming Sam and eeni-ren designs, colorful paintings by artist Jaime Zollars, and luxury bath products from After the Rayne. Shoppers looking for memorable gift ideas have top-of-the-line choices at Savvy Skirts and trend-spotters will feel right at home with the experts at Wickedly Chic and le Mod Boutique.

In addition to offering links to great shops and sites, Marmalade Pink bumps the excitement factor up a notch with monthly prize giveaways. Each month, visitors to the main site or Marmalade Pink member sites can register to win gift baskets valued at between $150 and $200. Chock full of goodies ranging from elegant jewelry to lush bath products, these prize baskets are a great introduction to the latest trends in the independent marketplace.
Although customers are flocking to the site for the wide range of shopping options, Marmalade Pink serves as more than a portal for consumers. Because it is often hard for smaller businesses to create a national presence, especially when competing with larger retailers, Marmalade Pink offers its member companies the benefit of group advertising and support. Member companies also make a commitment to giving back to the communities that support them. Five percent of sales each quarter are donated to a charity, such as the ALS Association.

About Marmalade Pink
Marmalade Pink offers consumers a shopping portal that allows them to think outside the mall. Founded in 2007 by successful small business owners Amy Steinberg and Liz Nonnemacher, Marmalade Pink serves as an online resource for shoppers who seek unique, high-quality products and services from fashion advice to the latest jewelry designs. Not Sleeping With Etsy

Due to the warm humid weather I was not able to get more than a few winks last night so inbetween snoozes I spent my time exploring the wonders of Etsy. If you've never heard of Etsy... think a Pretty & Artistic Ebay without the darn fees! While I was exploring I came accross so many unique pcs that were so very inexpensive considering the fact that they are homemade that I felt I just had to spread the word. Here are some of the unique stores I found and made friends with :)

Green Loves You

As someone who has a deep deep (way down deep in my tummy) appreciation for Foody Scented ANYTHING, I really thought these were adorable and very affordable most ranging at under $10. I really enjoyed looking through all of the different choices of foods. There are lots of sweet candies and desserts but there are also pea pods, hotdogs, The Breakfast Broach shown above, and many others! This seller does customs as well. Wonder if she can make me some lil cinny buns? I will have to find out!

Les Chic

Hmm... how much would my bitter sweet other half complain if i were to make another spurt of the moment at 3 am jewelry purchase and would it be worth the low grumbling noise he sometimes emits when he's annoyed? I prolly shouldn't, or this necklace might end up being my only company for a few days. These are a little more expensive but not by much. What I really like about these items is the natural and simple style. These are some very versatile pcs. that would go with a ton of different outfits and there are even matching earrings available as well. I really love this necklace entitled "Cocoa Flower" made w/cocoa shells, mother of pearl, and brown Czech. Very classy but also flirty and chic. What else would you expect from a store named Les Chic?

Now I figured out long ago that I love CP (Cold Process) Soaps. They're just so creamy, they lather so wonderfully, Ohhh how they Lather... but nevertheless I came across a really unique glycerin soap artist by the name of Twin Dreams Creations. Sooo many awesome soaps that are likely really wonderful to use but I don't think I'd want to spoil them! The Octopus really caught my eye... I certainly wouldn't want to take a shower with that! It would look so great in a nautical themed bathroom though wouldn't it? Maybe put a GI joe in it's grasps and plunge a miniature iron harpoon in the side of it's head! Then you can add some fake screaming and post it on YouTube. See, I have been inspired by an artist and I bet you will too if you take a quick peek.

Dark Chocolate and Coffee Scrubby bar. Omg, do I really need to say anything? You really must see the collection of Argyle, Neopolitan, Swirled, and Deliciously Scented Soaps in this shop. I'm so tempted by the Chocolate Peppermint Parfait but I'm wondering how one would keep ahold of it in the tub?

After yesterday's Post About Boutique Clothing A friend of mine demanded that I post a picture of the Vintage Pillowcase Dress I made myself. I am by no means sew-smart but I did manage to follow some rather simple instructions for making an old embroidered pillowcase into a pretty cute little dress for my daughter. I used bias tape for the armholes, satin ribbon for the ties, a few rossettes for decoration and I accented it with a pearl bracelet that I strung myself. If I ever make another one I'm thinking I will use Grossgrain instead of the Satin due to the fact that silky ribbon can get snags and pulls rather easily.

Guide to Boutique Shopping ~For Beginners!

Boutique Clothing

One of my favorite things about summer is watching my young daughters gather wildflowers in Airy Romantic Sun Dresses. They twirl, they giggle, they're completely care-free. It's so nice to see them doing something together peacefully that doesn't result in screeching, taunts, and hair pulling.

So of course, I'm always in search of beautiful but affordable outfits for not just warm weather but for Back to School as well. We've been through a ton of Gymboree, Oodles of Zoodles, Handfuls of Hannah and while the quality is fair enough, sometimes it's just not unique or simplistic enough to justify the price. After a few chocolate sundaes without instantaneous spot defense... you are left with nothing but a photograph and a memory or two. So, as an effort to make the most of that I started exploring the world of Boutique Dresses, Outfits, and Accessories. Surprisingly enough there are indeed Designers Online who can make you something unforgettable that is just as gentle on the money card as it is on your eyes.

I have come to learn that price is sometimes an indication of higher quality materials but never an indication of quality design. There are things that you really must take into consideration when making a purchase for Handmade Clothing, Hairbows, Bags... you name it. Here are some things you should at least take a second to think about before you process your orders:

  1. Are there any raw edges on the seams on the outfit, inside or out? Sewing in the edges of the fabric prevents fraying, and makes the item stronger and more durable. It also adds a presentable finished appearance to the item. It would also be appropriate to ask which stitch was used. Was it a ZigZag, Serged, Pinked?
  2. Are there any Ribbons or Bows and have the edges been properly sealed?
  3. Are there any Appliques and how have they been affixed? Were they machine stitched, hand stitched, Heat Sealed? Are there any edges left raw? If you message the designer and they reply telling you that it's been tacky glued or puff painted you probably want to look elsewhere hah! It's always good to know the specific details of all embellishments on your items in advance!
  4. Find out about the buttons, ties, and fasteners. It's good to know how you are going to put this on your child or even yourself and make sure that it is suitable for your needs.
  5. If you are buying a halter top or pillowcase dress that has ribbons for straps you should def. find out if the ribbon is stitched into place or if it is possible that your child can pull it out. These are a pain to get back in. My youngest once pulled one out and then carried it off to tie up our poor old cat in knots.
  6. Is it lined or is it a single layer? If it's lined, what is it lined with? Some people are allergic to wool (Like Me) and it's good to make sure your dress won't make you itch!
  7. Does it have a Maker/Brand Label? Some Designers have started adding their own label to the items they have produced.
  8. You will want to find out if the fabric has been pre-treated/pre-washed to prevent bleeding. Also, if it is machine washable, hand washable, or requires dry cleaning.
  9. It's always good to hang handmade items to dry if machine or hand washing is permitted, regardless of whether it would "Survive" a dryer. This will give your outfit a longer life, help to preserve it's colors, and gives you the opportunity to remove any spots or stains without accidentally baking them into the fabric forever.

If you are buying on ebay, where many reputable sellers have created cute store fronts you do have the advantage of reading feedback. In addition, you also have a great opportunity to email the seller to find out more about what you are interested in buying. Many times M2M or Made to Match Bows, Bloomers, Jewelry, Socks, Shoes, Bags or Custom Personalization are available as well if you just ask :)

Most Sellers are very personable and friendly people. They usually appreciate you taking the extra time to find out how they produce the adorable items in their stores because it's good for business and a happy customer is more likely to come back with friends!

I've fallen in love with some really cute shops, here are a few examples:

Paper Product Labels & The Sticky Truth!

Clear Carton Sealing Tape in a Wide Width

So, I went to take a shower this morning and reached for a Foaming Shower Scrub that I've been really excited to try because the scent is soooo peaceful and relaxing. It makes me feel like sipping a cup of tea in the cool morning air.

Here in Wisconsin there's a foggy morning air that I couldn't even begin to describe but have not found anywhere else that I have lived. I'd guess it has something to do with all the beautiful trees! If anyone knows of a Soap Maker who has captured this scent Oh please do let me know!

Anyway... As soon as I grabbed the jar I realized that I had unknowingly just begun a waterfall of inky paper and thick glue goo due to the paper label on the container. Now, I know it might sound shallow but for even my "Staple" favorites I really do care quite a bit about how a product looks. When I'm soaking in the tub or splashing around in the shower I want to open up something that Looks Clean, Feels Clean, Actually Makes me Clean, and takes me on a little trip of scent, texture, and Indulgence. If not, I just stop reaching for it... and I'm sure you've all had items you just don't reach for anymore. They end up in a box, on a swap board, given to a friend to try, or even tossed out.

Sometimes that paper label is just sooo cute though! Especially on an All Natural or Vegan product and I certainly can't blame any Shoppe for wanting thier items to look as clean and wholesome as part of the Earth... but that sticky residue on the jar and the icky papery mess stuck in my drain that sometimes ends up on my foot, I can't take it anymore!
So Anyway, I decided that from now on I'm going to stick some wide width clear tape over the label as soon as I pull it out of the shipping box! With a little extra effort I'm thinking my favorite Scrubs & Washes as well as lotions & sprays that might end up with an oily label can stay looking as adorable as they do on the sites from which they tend to originate. If you have any additional ideas or suggestions please let me know at mybluelynx@yahoo.com ! I'd love to know more about what other people are doing to solve this common problem.

Also, Today I Heard about a BIG BLOWOUT & SURPRISE SALE at Bissy's Boutique !

If you are new to the products now would be a great time to see what they are all about! In addition to the Sales, Shipping is a flat rate of only $4.50 which means you could really stock up on some great stuff!
